The Fantasy Cricket Odyssey in India

Hugely popular in the western region of the world, fantasy sports were something that the Indians knew but hardly experienced. The government of India never allowed its citizens to play the game because they believed that the game has to do something with gambling and fixing and thus, the concept was totally banned. Until the mid-2010's, when a group of people developed an app and asked people to play fantasy cricket on their platform. The government of course intervened and took necessary measures and banned the game from the country. After a lot of struggles and a lot of time in the court, they finally convinced the lawmakers that the game has nothing to do with gambling or fixing. Rather it is a game of skill and a bit of luck. Even though the government gave a clean chit to operate in India, the industry is yet to have a proper gaming license. The game is also not available in the play store and can only be downloaded from the website of a particular gaming application.

From there to now, the scenario has completely, completely changed. The journey in between wasn’t easy as well but it is now a billion-dollar industry. Multiple new fantasy gaming apps are being inaugurated every year and at this moment, there are more than 50 fantasy gaming apps present in India. However, like said, the struggles are still very much there. A lot of still banned fantasy sports and thus the people of those places can’t play fantasy sports despite the Supreme Court of India giving a clean chit. Maybe with time, the governments of those particular states will understand that it is just a game and how people can easily earn loads of money by applying their skill and playing the game by applying the knowledge.

The main reason behind such a success is because of how these fantasy sport organisations have branded their product. Many former and present cricketing stars are part of the system like Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma and so many others. These players help the organisations reach their target audience and also the users can compete against their heroes and earn 2X cash by beating them. The users can also play various cricket fantasy leagues to earn in crores. Thus, it can be said with absolute certainty that various fantasy organisations are doing splendid work and developing the game from time to time. If you are still not a part of it, you are missing the fun part. Honestly!
